My research interests centre on the use of probabilistic methods for extracting scientific knowledge from large, potentially complex data-sets. Nowadays, this principally involves statistical machine learning and its application to problems in medicine and cancer biology.
Medicine and biology are subjects that have become data rich in recent years, due to a wave of new molecular, imaging and other measurement technologies. The challenges of large data volumes, noisy measurements, and complex stochastic systems mean that there are now many important scientific questions in these areas that can be addressed using computational and statistical techniques.
The unifying theme of my research is statistical inference ('statistical machine learning' would also be a reasonable description), which means I spend pretty much all of my time working with probability theory, and Bayesian methods in particular.
